Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.
CFS collaborates with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with groundbreaking new high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. HTS magnets will enable compact fusion power plants that can be constructed faster and at lower cost. Our mission is to deploy these power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. To implement this plan, we are looking to add dedicated people to the team who treat people well, improve our work by adding multifaceted perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have achieved outstanding results through a range of pursuits, and have skills and experience related to this role.
The Buyer is a key member of the Supply Chain team. They are accountable for selecting the best sources within the assigned budget for each project, negotiating, placing, and managing orders, and overseeing suppliers’ activities from quote through receipt.
This role is designed for someone early in their career who understands supply chain best practices and who is ready to work collaboratively to upgrade their skills with hands-on learning under the mentorship of a great manager. The right candidate for this role is curious about technology and manufacturing and is interested in becoming a technical expert in a new commodity by working collaboratively with engineers and suppliers. For this position, we will happily train the person with the right technical and commercial aptitude. To be successful at CFS you must be a creative problem solver with the ability to work collaboratively on hard problems in a fast-paced environment with great people.

This team member will:

  • Run sourcing projects, coordinating cross-functionally, and adhering to commodity strategies where applicable
  • Gather and interpret technical and non-technical requirements, review statements of work
  • Identify potential suppliers
  • Negotiate short and long-term agreements for parts, subassemblies, finished goods, equipment, and/or services from suppliers
  • Monitor suppliers throughout the execution of the contracts
  • Support cost savings initiatives, lead time improvement projects, and quality improvement projects
  • Create purchase orders up to authorized limits
  • Visit suppliers as necessary to conduct business reviews or check on manufacturing milestones
  • Purchase in both MRP and project/purchase requisition-oriented type environments under departmental guidelines

The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:

  • 3+ years’ related work experience in a manufacturing, construction, supply chain, engineering or other relevant supplier-focused environment
  • Experience managing purchase order placement and fulfillment, quotes, supplier selection, and negotiation of price and lead time
  • Understanding of supply chain best practices
  • Ability to communicate with internal engineering, manufacturing, and suppliers in a collaborative way to define requirements that can be met by external suppliers
  • Aptitude to learn to read and interpret technical documents and engineering drawings
  • General understanding of contracts and contract language
  • Organizational and project management skills, with the ability to prioritize work to meet the business needs
  • Customer service mindset and entrepreneurial spirit
  • Exceptional creative problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Demonstrate integrity, respect, commitment to excellence, collaboration, creativity and agility
  • Ability to work well under pressure in a dynamic environment

Additional preferred experience and/or qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in the field of Supply Chain, Engineering, Business, Finance or other related field
  • Understanding of ERP systems and MRP logic
  • Previous experience in a start-up or high growth environment
  • Proven experience in supporting critical new product introduction activities
  • Experience sourcing highly technical products or experience managing highly technical suppliers through contracting and delivery
  • Previous experience working in a high mix-low volume environment
  • Work in a facility that contains industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics
