Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.

ARC will be the first machine to produce electricity from fusion energy, serving as the cornerstone to a new industry. The power generated by the ARC plasma will create strong neutron fluxes that need to be appropriately managed with the blanket and shielding systems. Assessing the performance of these systems, and their effects on other key systems (magnets, vacuum vessel, diagnostics, balance of plant, etc.) is key to iterating the ARC design. The nuclear and radiological engineer will work with the ARC Design team to develop innovative solutions to these challenges. They will work closely with the SPARC Design Team on transferring analysis tools, techniques, and know-how to the ARC design. They will also work closely with the ARC R&D team to identify critical R&D needs as well as opportunities to close the ARC design.
This team member will:
- Work with the ARC Design team to evaluate and iterate the nuclear and radiological impacts on key device systems and analyze the performance of power plant systems including: vacuum vessel and other internal components, blanket and shielding designs, magnet and diagnostics lifetimes, and balance of plant systems
- Develop analytical methodologies for a range of technical challenges to support all ARC systems related to the nuclear engineering technical areas including radiation transport, activation analysis, shielding design, nuclear heating, and far-field dose calculations
- Perform analysis related to neutronics modeling, radiological engineering, design, and operational health physics
- Be accountable for the quality and accuracy of the previously mentioned work, reports, and presentations
- Provide prompt feedback when a task encounters issues that preclude its timely completion.
- Comply with CFS design control processes, including but not limited to: Documenting analyses in written files; Arranging for check and review of analysis files; Upholding high standards of good-faith collaboration and teamwork
The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:
- Master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering or a bachelor’s degree in Nuclear Engineering plus 2 years of work experience in the field of nuclear engineering, preferably with diverse applications related to radiation transport. (This includes performing calculations that include shielding analyses, dosimetry, nuclear heating etc.)
- Must be able to obtain RSICC License for MCNP
- Experience with both deterministic and Monte Carlo methods of neutron/photon transport
- Strong analytical skills with fundamental understanding of the first principles of transport methods and nuclear data
- Experience with common nuclear engineering software, such as MCNP, OpenMC, FISPACT, ATTILA, SCALE, ORIGEN, etc.
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team of engineers, scientists, technical staff and others
- Ability to clearly express and critique ideas
- Great communication and organizational skills (required)
- Strong problem solving skills, ability to approach new problems with creativity
Additional experience and/or qualifications:
- Experience with the following: Python, FORTRAN, C++, Linux
- Knowledge of various nuclear codes and standards
- A PhD is beneficial but not required
- Ability to sit for extended periods of time
- Willingness to occasionally travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call
